Flourishing Systems: Re-envisaging Infrastructure as a Platform for Human Flourishing

This paper is about system-thinking and infrastructure. It recognises that systems-thinking is essential not only to unlocking the full value of digital transformation in the built environment, but also to provide much wider benefit that goes beyond the basic arguments for digitalisation and into the fundamental definition and purpose of infrastructure. The current crisis has highlighted just how connected everything is, as if to emphasise that we really need more informed systems-thinking. Indeed, as we dare to think beyond the crisis, it would be opportune to imagine a ‘new normal’ for infrastructure that is:
• more people-focussed
• more connected (i.e. more systems-based)
• more digital
• more sustainable (lower carbon and more circular)
