From the Golden Rule to Loving Kindness we know the way to sanity, courage over fear

Franklin Roosevelt knew: “All we have to fear is fear itself.” It is very hard to be fearfully rational. The adrenaline gets in the way. How can we meet people where they are with understanding and gentile discussion? Are we in the practice of listening and learning from the experience of old friends and new acquaintances? I believe if we practice this, despite our fear, courage will grow and we will see the humanity in even the most troubled person, including ourselves.

Please understand we must be our authentic selves. Benjamin Franklin once said: “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” This is a little harsh. I would would replace “deserve” with ‘will attain’. However, this is on point. The temporary safety of a affluent gated community will fail in the face of a planetary ecological collapse. All people, including those that disagree do deserve our honest opinion, as we deserve theirs.

Please exercise good will and honesty at every opportunity.

Go in peace for all humanity,

Gunnar Recht
